Strange Magic

One evening, I noticed a pale green light emanating from inside a dilapidated fort. The radiance of the full moon at          10,000 feet made checking it out too easy to resist. I entered the ruins to find a dozen soldiers dressed in uniforms from 100 years ago, armed with matching vintage rifles. They had been drinking tea when they spotted me, scrambling to their feet in surprise. As we eyed each other, I had a flash of insight; these guys were dead, but unaware of it. They were caught in a place between worlds.

Saddened by their dilemma, I felt a strong urge to help them somehow, but I did not know what to do. Abruptly, mahakala, Buddhist protectors-beings from the deva realm, appeared and began to swirl around the soldiers. A large white globe, perhaps five feet in diameter, appeared from behind me. It floated over to encapsulate one of the soldiers, picking him up and lifting him through the open fort of the roof of the fort. I watched the globe move higher and higher as more mahakala whirled around the now distant sphere, until it became just another star in the night sky.
